Galleria Academia

The Galleria Academia was a large building that used to be an arts school. Now it was a gallery, and its most famous piece of art? David, by Michelangelo. And we were going to see it.

We bought our tickets and audio guides and excitedly ushered ourselves in. The whole gallery was made of sixteen large rooms, all exhibiting amazing works of art. We headed into the first room, which held a lot of small paintings as well as a huge and intricate sculpture in the smack bang centre. We wandered into the Lorenzo Bartolini exhibition, a showcase exhibiting works by Bartolini. There were a lot of marble and plaster busts of people who had commissioned him to do it for them. Sculptures of women and a couple of paintings too. This guy was so good.

We went into the next room, and body heat that was exploding off people hit me. Why were there so many people in here? Then I saw him. David. Michelangelo's work of art.

David was breathtaking. So detailed. I noticed that Michelangelo had sculpted his pupils, instead of leaving them blank. I now realized the that Michelangelo had tone to the utmost extreme to make David perfect. There were two duplicates of David in other places in Italy too, the one in Florence and one somewhere else. He really was an inspirational and beautiful sculpture.

I watched a video on how they made panel paintings. First they carved the wood to make it the shape they wanted. They usually carved it in a few pieces, then used animal skin residue to stick it together. They then drew the design they wanted onto a piece of paper, and used a needle to poke holes in the outlines. Carbon powder was poured onto the paper, thus forming an outline on the wood. Gold leaf is then stuck onto the wood, gilding it. Paint is then put on the wood and voila! You have a panel painting!

The beautiful artwork housed in the Academia was just too good for words. That was the thought that rang clearly in my head on the way back to the hotel. It truly was.
